CHIROPRACTIC CARE
Chiropractic care is a wonderful healing modality to incorporate into your overall health. Many misconceptions about chiropractic care often aim to devalue its valuable medical service. Here at Better Brain & Body, we are aware of the life-changing results that chiropractic care produces for patients. And we are here to discuss how impactful chiropractic care can be for you. Dr. Alicia Brown is the owner and lead doctor of Better Brain & Body and was voted 2018's 'Best Chiropractor' in Charlotte. Chiropractic care is one way she serves her community to help patients achieve full body alignment and optimal overall health.
What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic care is a branch of alternative medicine that is becoming widely mainstream, and rightly so. It emphasizes the body's natural ability to heal itself when aligned properly through chiropractic adjustment. Adjustments can involve manual, physical, or tool-based manipulation of the body or spine, depending on the chiropractor you choose for treatment.

It’s common to hear that chiropractic care is just “cracking the back,” but it’s much more than that, and many different chiropractic techniques do not involve “cracking” the body. For instance, at Better Brain & Body, we utilize a non-invasive and comfortable chiropractic technique called the Activator Method. But more on that later.

The Nervous System and Chiropractic
The nervous system is complex and vital in the human body. It controls and coordinates numerous functions, allowing us to live our everyday lives. These functions include cognition and consciousness, motor function, sensory processing, hormone regulation, autonomic functioning, reflexes, and more. Simply put, if your nervous system is not healthy, it is difficult to live a normal life.

Much of our nervous system is housed in our spine and protected by other body components, including the vertebrae (or vertebral column). The vertebral column is the column of bones that makes up the spine. Inside that column is the nervous system. The spine extends from the base of the skull to the tailbone. Your nervous system in your spinal column or cord sends information from the brain to the rest of the body to perform actions. It is VITAL.

The nervous system comprises specialized cells and structures that work together to transmit electrical and chemical signals, allowing it to enact our bodily functions. The nervous system includes the brain, spinal cord, and a network of nerves. For example, to move your hand, your brain sends a message to your nervous system, and your nervous system then coordinates this movement through the interaction of these electrical and chemical signals. This process happens at lightning speed. This example only explains movement, but the nervous system controls many functions in many body areas, and it is a crucial component to keep in tip-top shape. Since much of the nervous system is in the spine, maintaining proper spinal health and alignment is integral to proper nervous system functioning.

What Does a Chiropractic Adjustment Do?
An adjustment refers to the service chiropractors provide during a patient's treatment. Remember, chiropractic care aims to align the body and spine in a functioning and healthy manner that allows the nervous system in the spine to operate at its best. When the body is aligned properly, health will follow.

Adjustments aim to correct misalignments or "subluxations," deviations from the spine's normal alignment, or misaligned vertebrae or joints. These misalignments may lead to nerve compression or irritation, affecting the brain and nervous system connection.
Chiropractic care can alleviate pressure on nerves and improve their function by restoring proper spinal alignment, thereby improving bodily function. However, misalignments left unadjusted may cause or contribute to various unwanted symptoms or conditions.
They may lead to nerve compression or irritation, affecting nervous system function. By restoring proper spinal alignment, chiropractic care can alleviate pressure on nerves and improve their function, thereby improving bodily function. Without proper spinal alignment, this pressure on the nerves can cause inflammation. When inflammation reduces, so does pain. Chiropractic care also improves nerve function, range of motion, and circulation.

Next, we'll outline chiropractors' different techniques and the tool Better Brain & Body uses with our patients.
How is a Chiropractic Adjustment Performed?
Chiropractic adjustments, also known as spinal manipulations, involve the application of controlled force to specific areas of the spine. Spinal Alignments may be
-
Manual or Hands-On
-
Tool-Based & Non-Invasive

Tool-Based & Non-Invasive Adjustment techniques include the following,
-
Activator Method
-
Spinal Decompression Table

There are many manual-based adjustment techniques that chiropractors use, including,
-
The Direct Thrust Technique
-
Spinal Mobilization
-
Thompson Drop Table Technique

If you've seen videos of chiropractors performing "hands-on" adjustments, they might use one of the above techniques or another more specialized version not listed here. While beneficial in many individualized cases, manual or hands-on adjustments are a more invasive experience that some patients may wish to avoid for personal preference. Similarly, if manual adjustments are not performed correctly, this can lead to a pinched nerve or joint inflammation or, worse, vertebral artery dissection or VAD, which can cause an acute stroke. VAD is a very rare occurrence, happening to less than 1 out of every 100,000 people who receive manual chiropractic adjustments. It is important to ensure you see a highly qualified chiropractic doctor with the proper credentials to administer manual adjustments or opt for a more holistic chiropractic technique if that is what you are looking for.
At Better Brain & Body, Dr. Alicia Brown uses a non-invasive and holistic tool called the Activator to perform chiropractic adjustments. The Activator uses gentle force to correct misalignment of the spine and body. Overall, it is a comfortable and safe experience that can produce great results. Depending on your chiropractic needs, Dr. Brown may also recommend using our spinal decompression table. Spinal decompression is a computerized technology that helps align the spine and body while relieving back pain and spinal tension. It is an effective therapy for herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, sciatica, spinal stenosis, facet joint syndrome, muscle spasms, and overall neck and back pain.

Chiropractic Care & "Cracking" Sounds
When correcting these misalignments hands-on with manual techniques, a cracking sound may be produced, but not always. Rest assured, the cracks you hear during a chiropractic adjustment are not your bones. The cracking sound comes from the release of pressure that has built up in the joints as gas bubbles. These gas bubbles contain properties like oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. The cracking sound depends on the level of force or speed used in correcting the misaligned vertebrae or joints and may be pleasant or uncomfortable, depending on the individual.
The Activator, the device our clinic uses to adjust these misalignments, usually does not produce a noticeable cracking sound because of the low level of force used to align the body and spine.

Chiropractic Care Benefits:

1. Reduced Inflammation
2. Improved Nerve Function
3. Increased Range of Motion
4. Improved Blood Flow Circulation
5. Reduced Muscle Tension
6. Improved Overall Health
Chiropractic Educational Requirements:
Medical education for chiropractors is an intense endeavor. Their education requirements are comparable to a medical doctor’s. Chiropractors must obtain an undergraduate degree in human biology, kinesiology, exercise science, or any other science-related field. Then, they complete a four-year or more degree at a chiropractic school. Academic classes in chiropractic school are just as intense as medical school, and chiropractors study extensively the anatomy of the body, just as other medical practitioners do.
The Chiropractic Care Approach:
Holistic Approach:
Chiropractic care tends to be approached from a holistic perspective. Chiropractors have immense knowledge of the musculoskeletal system (skeleton) but also may consider lifestyle factors, diet, and exercise as part of their treatment plans.
Individualized Treatment:
Chiropractors assess patients individually, considering their medical history, physical condition, and specific health concerns. Treatment plans are personalized to meet the unique needs of each patient.
Non-Invasive and Drug-Free:
Chiropractic care is generally non-invasive, relying on manual techniques, tool-based applications, therapeutic exercises, and lifestyle advice. Chiropractors do not prescribe medications or perform surgical procedures.
Preventive Care:
Chiropractic care often includes education on ergonomics, posture, stretching, nutrition, and exercises to help patients prevent musculoskeletal issues and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
